About SUSMAGPRO – Impacts
What are the wider impacts of the project for a sustainable and prosperous future?
Sustainability
SUSMAGPRO will demonstrate clean and sustainable recycling and recovering of secondary rare earth elements (REEs) from waste magnet materials as well as reprocessing of new magnetic products, thus establishing a circular economy.
Availability and Growth
SUSMAGPRO will increase the availability of raw materials for producing permanent magnets in the EU and initiate the adoption of recycled REEs into a range of new magnetic products.
Security and Stability
SUSMAGPRO will introduce an eco-friendly, sustainable source of REEs in the EU, establishing a stable supply and reducing dependence on imports.
Knowledge and Skills
SUSMAGPRO will extend current know-how of magnet recycling to scrap recovery from new sources using innovative pre-processing, upgrading and coating-removal techniques. After project end, the SUSMAGPRO consortium aims to expand business across the EU, creating added value and new skills and jobs in raw-materials producing, equipment manufacturing and downstream industries.
Innovation and Academic excellence
Key innovations like the Hydrogen-based Processing of Magnet Scrap (HMPS) are already protected. SUSMAGPRO expects new patents to emerge and spin-off companies specialising in various aspects of the recycling supply chain to be created. The SUSMAGPRO consortium will also publish in international journals and target new research opportunities.
Raising Awareness and Involvement
SUSMAGPRO will raise awareness of the importance of raw materials for society and the challenges related to their supply within Europe. It aims to increase acceptance of and trust in a sustainable circular economy of rare earth magnets among various stakeholder groups and the wider public.
